This album was described to me as being a post hardcore record, but upon reviewing it myself I would have to qualify that assessment. This album certainly has some moments you’d expect to find on a Poison The Well, Misery Signals, or a Shai Hulud record but it’s blended nicely with traditional rock riffage and hard rock vocals to create a memorable sound. Wolves Like Us delivers a pretty solid album on their debut full length, “Late Love”. The album wastes no time rocking listeners with the pump-me-up opener “Burns Like a Paper Rose”, and the rest of the album proceeds with moments of aggression interspersed with moments of relative calm. Wolves Like Us does a great job here writing a consistent record; all of the songs are good, and there isn’t any song that stands out as being worse than the others, which is always welcome. The vocals have a melodic quality with rougher overtones (not screaming one would expect to find on a post hardcore album) reminiscent of something one might expect to hear on the radio. Given that fact, this album is great for your friend who says about your music “I like the music, but I don’t like all the screaming” (or for that matter, if that describes you, it’s a great album for you too).
This record rocks all the way from the beginning to the ending 8 minute long song “To Whore With Foreign Gods” which wraps things up nicely with its drawn out ambience. Expect to see more good things from these guys in the future.
