Editor's
Note and Correction RE: Seventh Servant Interview
.
There are two things I always say about
my work as Thrashpit editor. The first is that there are few things I like
as much as editing Thrashpit. The second is that at the end of the day,
my work here is still a hobby.
At times, this presents a problem. Because
I care about my work here so much, I often hold Thrashpit to a standard
on par with professional publications despite the fact it is labor of love
done for fun. Thrashpit has no profit, no paid positions and (in this internet
age of ours) increasingly few material benefits. Despite this, I look forward
to writing for it as often as possible. Sadly, there comes a time when
that same standard I (along with my staff) staff strives for must be applied
critically towards some mistake that has been made.
This is one of those times. In an interview
my brother Matt Hensch did a while back with Seventh Servants vocalist/guitarist
John Greely, I mistakenly added an extra vowel to his name and misidentified
him as the guitarist/vocalist of Iced Earth in 1992 when in fact he was
just the vocalist. Speaking in the professional sense, it is a mistake
no serious music publication should make and a horribly careless one at
that. Speaking in the personal sense, it is an embarrassing gaffe, the
likes of which I wish I would have caught.
Either way, the damage has been done. Though
the facts have been corrected, the original article was a great disservice
to John. With all this in mind, I would like to formally apologize to Mr.
John Greely and beg his forgiveness. Beyond this, I call on him to place
none of the blame on my talented younger brother/staff reporter Matt Hensch
as this was my sole mistake. Last but not least, I hope he will recognize
not only my sloppiness but my passion for music, perhaps someday letting
us go again for round two.
I apologize profusely to Matt, John, my
publisher Keavin and all the readers who caught my mistake before I did.
I promise I will try my hardest not to let it happen again.
Sincerely,
Mark Hensch

Publisher's Note: Mark has been
the editor of Thrashpit for over three years and this is the first time
a mistake like this has been made and a correction to a published article
has been needed. That should tell you something about the quality that
he and his staff of writers strive for because that is virtually unheard
of in publishing. (Just take a look at the "corrections" in the New York
Time during any given week to see how perfect the "paper of record" is).
In the rush and excitement to get something to press sometimes honest mistakes
can be made. It's just the nature of the beast. I told Mark that I didn't
feel his statement was really needed. He caught the mistake rather quickly
and had it corrected. But it just shows you the level of integrity he has
and the high standards he holds for himself and anything he is associated
with. Like Thrashpit's big sister publication antiMusic, this is a labor
of love and of passion but I have to tell you that Mark has brought to
it a level or professionalism beyond what you will find in even the most
"professional" of music publications. I just felt that since Mark felt
the need to issue his apology, I would take the opportunity to publicly
commend Mark and everyone associated with Thrashpit for a job well done
that has gone far beyond the call of duty. I'm honored to publish their
hard work and proud of everything they have done. Most publishers would
kill to have talented writers of this caliber. Their passion and their
integrity shine through in everything they do and they have created a publication
that metal fans can trust to be honest, thoughtful, informative and ultimately
authoritative. So let's not let one single mistake take away from the years
of exceptional work Mark and his crew have done here.
