Thrashing Like a Maniac Review
by Billy D. Gamble
.
It has been a long time since the days of Bay Area 80s thrash. Years have gone by since classics such as Metallica's Master of Puppets or Slayer's Reign in Blood were released. Today new school thrash has arrived and is currently on the up and up. Earache Records' has been signing many new school thrash bands and have released Thrashing Like a Maniac that includes Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste, Evile, and many new and up-and-coming thrash acts. Every song on the album is included with its very own face melting guitar solo salute to thrash, each one screeching bloody hell. The compilation is great for kids trying to get into thrash and for old-school fans to find new favorites. The album kicks off with LA's Bonded by Blood's "Immortal Life". The band sounds like a slightly more melodic D.R.I. with a slower tempo. The vocals on the sound resemble those of Megadeth meets D.R.I. The song has not one but two face melting Seasons in the Abyss- esque solos tucked alongside thrashing mad riffs. Punk crossover thrashers Municipal Waste lend their title track from new album The Art of Partying. Municipal Waste is one of the reasons thrash is making such a come back after extensive touring with bands like Gwar and Toxic Holocaust. The song is a real circle pit anthem, classic 80s thrash with punk twists. LA New school act Fueled by Fire put down a track from their new record Spread the Fire called "Massive Execution". Their sound resembles that of Sepultura's Morbid Visions, meets a Megadeth guitar solo, apparent muddy bass, and crusty thrash vocals. Stockholm's Decadence is the only band on the album to have a girl in the group. "Metallic" Kitty Saric delivers some Arch Enemy style vocals but with a thrashier delivery. The guitar work is very technical and isn't limited to power chords and solos. The song builds in many ways and is complex. Decadence's sound has a certain groove metal meets Children of Bodom progressive feel about it that's hard to explain. Everything else is well worth checking out but the above tracks are the highlights for sure. 1. Bonded by Blood – Immortal Life 2. Evile - Thrasher 3. Municipal Waste – the Art of Partying 4. Dekapitator – Deathstrike Command 5. Fueled by Fire – Massive Execution 6. Decadence - Corrosion 7. Warbringer – Total War 8. SSS - Overload 9. Gama Bomb – Zombi Brew 10. Merciless - Death Exumer 11. Deadfall - Resistance is Futile 12. Lazarus – Last Breath 13. Toxic Holocaust – War is Hell 14. Mutant – Psycho Therapy 15. Violator – Atomic Nightmare 16. Send More Paramedics – Twilight of the Flies
