Arson Anthem Review
by Billy D. Gamble
.
Southern hardcore punk super group Arson Anthem has released an album of short ballads of madness. Arson Anthem contains Mike Williams of Eyehategod on vocals, Phil Anselmo former Pantera and Superjoint Ritual frontman and current Down singer on guitar, Hank Williams III of Assjack and Superjoint Ritual on drums, and newcomer Collin Yeo on bass. Need I say more? The album starts of with "Year of the Fork", a punk count off and an explosion of punk power chords, distorted vocals and bass and constantly speeding drums. The album sounds like Napalm Death getting beaten by Superjoint Ritual. Anselmo's guitar debut is constantly simple yet somewhat avant-garde. He tries different chords and odd timed tempos. The guitar on the album ranges from simple punk power chord to viciously fast riffing. Hank Williams III carries over the Superjoint Ritual drum work. The album also contains avant-garde breakdowns like in "The Avoider", where its sounds almost out of time, but then kicks right back into the barrage. Arson Anthem lacks Eyehategod's doom, hovers over Pantera's thrash, but defiantly hits Superjoint Ritual's southern hardcore right on it's bull's-eye. The album is a D.R.I./Melvins gang fight mixing punk, distortion, with a hint of thrash. The album is almost 11 minutes too long. Its loud, it's fast, and it's most certainly heavy. It reminds me of older Converge and Dillenger Escape Plan when they had Mike Patton. It is pretty sound stuff overall. Arson Anthem's S/T 1. Year of the Fork 2. Doomed Morale 3. Bunker Life 4. Hammer Them Out 5. Wrecked Like Clockwork 6. Cops Shoot Coke 7. The Avoider 8. Sri Lankan Medication
