Arise and Ruin - The Final Dawn Review
by Billy D. Gamble
.
At the Gates really set the stage for modern music; an example of this could be Canadian self-proclaimed thrashers Arise and Ruin's Victory Records debut The Final Dawn. Arise and Ruin put an Americanized hardcore twist on the album. After unleashing their assault of generic riffs, where At the Gates would probably have put a face-melting, balls-to-the-wall solo, Arise and Ruin inserts a breakdown for the kids to swing about to. The album begins with a subtle Exodus tribute with "Bound by Blood." It sounds like Chimaira meets Pig Destroyer while fighting with Throwdown and landing a sucker punch or two for Chimaira. The song could almost be an At the Gates clone until about half way through when a breakdown takes the solo's place. The song then fades out with another breakdown and with some screams thrown in over the repetitive chug (you know how it sounds). Sadly, The Final Dawn doesn't really go anywhere. It's the same riff rehashed and nothing about Arise and Ruin can be considered thrash. The album does manage to sneak in a few face melters like "To the Grind", but there is only so much hardcore that can be tolerated by my ears. The songs are the same, the vocals are too upfront in the mix, and the drums can barely be heard. This album sucks. Arise and Ruin - The Final Dawn 1. Bound by Blood 2. The Final Dawn 3. End of the Road 4. To the Grind 5. Amidst Devils 6. Unbound 7. Always the Same 8. Pale Horse 9. In Life 10. Fear Itself
