Grave Digger - 25 To Live Review

by Matt Hensch

.
Grave Digger have quite a history behind them. They have released eleven studio albums and have even disbanded and then reformed. Nevertheless, Grave Digger never fails to impress, and thankfully we can recap their history with 25 To Live. Marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of Grave Digger, 25 To Live was recorded live in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The material here is awesome. Containing tracks from most of their albums, Grave Digger really gives their fans something to be happy about.

The stage presence of Grave Digger is phenomenal. Singer Chris Boltendahl constantly interacts with the crowd and is particularly amazing as he leads them on with the Grave Digger anniversary and always taunts with the next song. The crowd's energy is well matched with Grave Digger's stage presence. The crowd is chanting and screaming whenever silence appears before the next track in the set. The list itself is also incredible. Containing old and new fan favorites such as "The Last Supper," "Shoot Her Down," and "Excalibur," the set list couldn't really be any better for the hungry crowd. The performance is well produced and the sound is crystal clear. An awesome live album.

On the other hand, we have the DVD. The DVD is in no comparison with the live album for several reasons. One reason this DVD is weaker then the album is the beginning movie. Before the concert, there is useless footage of the band standing around in an airport, working out and interviews with almost no audio. When the concert finally starts, the band pulls together a very well done show. The only problem here is the camera work. Every now and then, the camera shows Boltendahl running in slo-motion, which is really cheesy. I also must say keyboard man Hans Peter Katzenburg sure looks cool with that reaper robe!

The concert is very well done and is most likely memorable for those lucky fans. The CD is awesome and DVD has it's moments, but the DVD really doesn't match the energy and power of the live album. Pretty good nonetheless.

Grave Digger - Yesterday Review

by Matt Hensch

.
I usually don't waste time with singles, but Grave Digger's re-recording of "Yesterday" is an exception. Grave Digger has become one of my favorite bands in metal, so I don't shove off any of their material. "Yesterday" was originally placed on the band's debut, "Heavy Metal Breakdown," way back in 1984. Fast forward twenty two years into 2006 with a new single of "Yesterday"

The re-recording of "Yesterday" is simply flawless. The production is much better here then it is on "Heavy Metal Breakdown." The production is clear, the piano is heart warming, and the revised riffs are incredible. Chris Boltendahl's vocals sound different from the old version, but there's quite a bit of time between the two recordings! Regardless of what your opinions are about "Yesterday," the re-recording of this tune is classic. The orchestra version of "Yesterday" is pretty sweet as well. The chorus sounds way different the guitars, but it also makes the song seem more relaxing in some ways. "The Reaper's Dance" is a nifty rocker that won't be appearing on Grave Digger's new record even though it's a new song. If the new album sounds like "The Reaper's Dance," then it's going to be a great album. The Led Zeplin cover of "No Quarter" is quite interesting too.

This is a great single. It's cheap, it's good, and the special edition comes with a live DVD, so why not get it? Essential for Grave Digger fans....and I'm stoked about the new album!
