Alex Lloyd – Watching Angels Mend

Eclectic Album of the Year

The following was originally published in our Review section.

Review by Keavin Wiggins
This album is like one of those unexpected treasures that show up on your door step. We’ve been a bit backlogged here at anti, getting reviews done so this CD has latterly been sitting in a pile on my desk and now I’m cursing myself for letting that happen as Alex Lloyd’s beautiful songs would have been a sure tonic to some of the lackluster releases of the past few months.

Lloyd follows the singer-songwriter tradition but instead of middle of the road acoustic trappings he goes for full features songwriting with lush harmonies, unforgettable melodies, and a wall of sound approach to the music that underlies the vocals. The music has a retro feel to it at times that would have found this album a top seller in the late 60’s but he also has a modern vibe that would do a band like Tonic proud.

Alex Lloyd’s biggest asset aside from his songwriting skills is his soulful vocals. He doesn’t have the range of a Jeff Buckley but his instrument is indeed amazing!

It’s hard to pick a favorite song in this collect, since all of the tracks stand on there own. This is highly recommended album for anyone who like melodic, yet potent music that doesn’t have to resort to hand banging to get your attention.  Australia can be proud of this import! The songs are here, it’s just a matter to see if the thick headed radio programmers here in the states have enough taste and sense to by pass the usual rules and give Alex the chance at the American mainstream he deserves, heaven knows we need quality music like this to help invigorate a dying music market here in America. Either that or it would be interesting to see if EMI puts their muscle behind this album.
