An interview with Andy Goldman
By Debbie Seagle
<--Part III
RNW: Well, and you have to do it
the way its right for you. You know?
Andy: Right. And for a band
like us, playing our music, I wouldn’t want to do it any other way.
I want to kids to first respect us and then maybe sing the song over and
over in their head. I’d rather be like the Deftones. The way
their career took off, I’d like to us do that type of thing where just
everybody knows the Deaftones, everybody loves the Deftones. Maybe
you can’t name a single Deftones song, but you know them and you love them.
RNW: Well you know, I think you’re
a much better representation of Latino culture and music in the Latino
culture than Ricky Martin or . . . you know?
Andy: Puya is the band that I think
has the corner on that market. Latin, heavy music. When it
comes to Latin music, those guys are the direction to turn in. They’re
doing it, coming up with heavy Latin music. Those are the guys right
there.
RNW: Yeah, they’re great. So,
MCA, how are things going there? Treating you well?
Andy: Awesome. We’re here in
LA and we got a bunch of our crew out here to see us, a bunch of MCA people.
They’ve been really cool to us and whatever we needed, they’ve supported
us. We’re on a nice bus now for Ozzfest and they give us the corporate
. . .
RNW: You got the big Prevost with
the leather seats? Yeah ba-by!
Andy: Not the leather seats, they
are soft and plush though! And soft.
RNW: You have, like, lots of water
in the fridge and stuff?
Andy: Tons of water! We have
so much Yoo-Hoo (a chocolate drink)! The Yoo-Hoo vendors here . .
.
RNW: (laughs) Are you the big Yoo-Hoo
drinker here?
Andy: Oh we all drink it here – its
ridiculous. The Yoo-Hoo vendors here, they have palettes of it and
they get more every show, so they just auction it off to the bands.
They’re like “want some Yoo-Hoo?” Everyday our tour manager says
yeah, so we ended up having like stock piles of . . . like our bays
under our bus, one bay is completely filled, like 100 Yoo-Hoos in it.
RNW: Eww, that stuff’s going to get
baaaad as you’re going across America in the heat!
Andy: We try to drink it up as fast
as we can, its just a damn tasty beverage.
RNW: Well lets get this wrapped up
so you can go out and talk to the fans. What would you like them
to know about Nonpoint?
Andy: Its hard to put it down to
one word.
RNW: It doesn’t have to be one, use
several.
Andy: You get the record and I think
we’re more of a live band than a studio band so I would say just come and
see our band live and that’s how you get the best impression of us.
You can sit back and listen to the record, that’s like one version of us.
But to get what we’re really about, even the video we have out doesn’t
really represent us. You have to come and see us live and see us
perform because we’re trying to take it to another level, not just the
music but our performance on stage. Not just one song and do another
song, we want to make it when you go to an opera or you go to a theatre
show, it starts, it finishes. You get the same vibe from whole thing.
That’s what we try to do in our show. We’re going to be touring and
touring and touring.
RNW: Now what about after Ozzfest?
Andy: We have a headlining tour we’re
setting up. A couple of different prospects we’re looking at.
Maybe headlining with another band or bringing out some newer band.
We’ve been around the country four times now, so we’re picking up a pretty
decent following everywhere.
RNW: Sounds like the only way to
go.
Andy: After Ozzfest, about a month,
or a month and a half of headlining touring and then we’re going into the
studio to do the new record.
RNW: Are you writing already for
that?
Andy: Yeah, we’ve got a lot of stuff
written and we’re going to take a month off before we record to just go
away and rehearse every day in the studio.
RNW: Are you going to record in Florida
or here in California?
Andy: Not set yet. We’re not
really too sure where we’re going to do it. We have a place set up
in Florida but we’re still looking at other options. We’re hoping
to get the record out by March or April of next year.
RNW: Well we’ll be there when you
do. Thanks a lot for letting us get to know you and good luck to
you!
