"I don’t know of anything that we have more
fun doing. In fact, we’ve been in this band longer than marriage,
longer than school, longer than anything we’ve ever done. And it
doesn’t seem like 30 years either!" Billy Gibbons
In
The Beginning . . .
Billy Gibbons
was a guitarist with Moving Sidewalks, a Houston, Texas band in
the late 60s. When that band broke up, Billy and his manager Bill
Ham began looking for another band opportunity. Another Houston musician,
Frank
Beard joined forces with Billy and they began auditioning for a bass
player. Having no luck finding the right "fit" with the audition
process, Frank recommended the bass player from his old band American
Blues, Dusty Hill. With Dusty on board, they began to
meld their influences into the signature sound they have been known for
these past 30 years. Smokey blues, delta music and hard hitting rock
guitar came together to produce that "Little Ol Band From Texas."
They are distinct in their sound, immediately recognizable in appearance
and the only rock & roll band out there that has all their original
members in tact after 30 years!
What
Are They Up To Now?
"We still enjoy playing together, and as a
band, that means a lot, if not everything in this unified pursuit of the
collective unknown." Billy Gibbons
The definitive southern
rock/blues band ZZ Top is still criss-crossing the US in support of their
last CD, "XXX." Their dates last into early March 2000.
At venues where they play, Confederate flags are draped everywhere and
the capacity crowds are in a "party til you puke" mode hours before the
doors open. Although the band has a 30 year history, their fans run
the gamut of generations and all have the same appreciation of the guitar
driven rock with southern blues roots.
When the lights go
out, the night belongs to the legend. What more do you need to say
about "That Little ‘Ol Band from Texas?" Dusty, Billy and Frank can
fill an arena with more nasty guitar licks and kick ass rhythms than any
six men and that’s just what they do. No pyrotechnics or flashy costumes
are necessary, just pure, adventurous music making. New tracks from
the "XXX" CD such as "Fearless Boogie" (the first single)
and "Poke Chop Sandwich" were recognizable ZZ Top fare and blended
right into the songs that get the partied out crowds to their feet.
You know what I’m talkin bout . . . "Cheap Sunglasses," "Give
Me All Your Loving" and "Legs," (complete with fuzzy guitar
and bass!) And what could possibly top that? How about an encore
featuring "La Grange?"
