The Ease
- Awkward Moments
By coming down
“Nothing in the world could make you feel
better than this.” (Twitch) Well I’m not sure about that, but there probably
aren’t a whole lot of things that could. When I asked for the review of
The Ease’s ‘Awkward Moments’, I expected there to be a whole lot of them,
but what I found was a coherent disc chalk full of 13 good pop/rock songs.
Large doses of piano and guitar mixed with liberal amounts of grooving
beats make this disc a solid listen all the way through.
Luke Sheets has a hard to ignore vocal
style that you want to pass off as an Eddie Vedder via Scott Stapp wannabe,
but by the third track, ‘Holiday,’ you realize you’ve been deceived,
this guy can sing. He’s not ripping anyone off, he’s just singing his ass
off. The guitar work isn’t going to raise any eyebrows as being technically
sensational, but Sheets certainly has an ear for a nice hook and is adept
at finding unique tones and effects to compliment his earthy, organic songwriting.
Songs such as ‘Twitch’ and ‘What You Wanted’
are extremely bass driven and have a fantastic throbbing tone that gives
them a violent undercurrent rarely heard in today’s music scene which is
so diluted with passive emotion and shrink-wrapped feelings.
There’s a nice mix of mellow, acoustic/piano
driven songs and hard-edged rock songs that keep ‘Awkward Moments’ from
developing any sort of lull. This is definitely one disc that is worth
the price of admission.
