Supergrass - Supergrass is 10 |
by Gary Schwind
This is an excellent collection of celebrating
the first ten years of Supergrass. One disc is a compilation of the
greatest Supergrass songs so far. The other disc is a toned-down
live version of a lot of their greatest hits. James released a similar
“best of” compilation where Disc One was their greatest studio recordings
and Disc Two was a mostly acoustic live performance of some of their best
songs.
Disc One of this compilation kicks off
with “Caught by the Fuzz” from their first album I Should Coco.
They follow that up with “Pumping on Your Stereo” in which Gaz sounds a
lot like Mick Jagger.
The real charm of Supergrass is that they
can sound like The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Radiohead and other British
bands, but they maintain their own personality. For example, the
beginning of “Moving” sounds a lot like Radiohead, but then moves into
a rollicking glam rock chorus that sounds like Slade.
Supergrass moves comfortably from Ramones-style
punk (“Caught by the Fuzz”) to glam rock (“Moving,” “Mansize Rooster”)
to good old-fashioned rock n roll (“Seen the Light,” “Sun Hits the Sky,”
and “Kiss of Life”). What makes Supergrass a great band is that they
can move easily from one to the other, and even incorporate various influences
into one song.
Frankly, there aren’t a lot of negative
things to say about this collection. It includes all the Supergrass
songs that a fan of the band will love. It conveys the energy that
Supergrass brings to both their recordings and their live performances.
There is one area where I will grade this album down, but it’s not a big
thing. The live album contains ten songs that appear on the “Best
of” disc and only two songs that don’t appear on the “best of” disc.
If I were the stuffed suit assigned to this album, I would have made more
of a difference between the live disc and the studio disc. Like I
said, it’s not a big thing, but I have to grade this collection down slightly
for that.
