Rolling Stone may think
Britney rocks, but real rock fans don't. There are real women making real
rock and this series is all about them. The good, the bad and the
ugly. It doesn't matter, as long as they are woman and they rock you can
find them here!
Slunt
By Joey Grace
I wouldn’t call them hard or even metal,
unless you would call The Donnas metal. No, Slunt is more pop-metal
for a metal head’s girlfriend. The songs are full of catchy hard
rock hooks and lyrics about a woman’s assertive independence. Frontwoman
Abby Gennet has a nice refined voice that she tries to harden up to fit
with the thick guitars. She definitely seems like a choir geek that
has been corrupted by the high school rock drop out, with his jean jacket
and Metallica patch. I would hate to genderize this band but it is
basally chick rock for chick rock fans.
In the songs “The best thing” and “Not
about you” Abby sings about guys missing out on the best thing, which is
her and how she is better off without the tards. But she quickly
digresses in “I wanna be your only one.” This punk-pop-super-ballad
is catchy and could serve as their single. It’s steady beat keeps it going
and the fuzzed out guitars and harmonized vocals will make all the girls
pull out there pony tails and whip there died black hair all around their
room while dancing in front of the mirror. None of the guitars are
too fancy, with rudimentary solos, and standard metal riffs. They
even go as far as to cover, Romeo Void’s “Never say never,” which cements
my decision that Slunt is ultimately chick metal.
