Joss Stone - "The Soul Sessions"
By Linda Spielman

HOLY VOICE BATMAN!!!!! That's all there is to say about Joss Stone. If you were passing a radio or TV and heard her sing, you would never imagine "that" voice coming out of a 16 year-old, white English girl. Comparisons are flying around to the likes of Angie Stone (now relation) and Aretha Franklin.

Although Stone's first release is a cover compilation, she shows amazing strength at becoming a force to be dealt with in the near future. In a world filled with so much Hip Hop and Pop music right now (which is great), it is refreshing to hear some serious old school soul. Having the a fresh face like Stone to expose the younger masses to a genre of music such as soulful, jazz infusion music can only heighten the appreciation of music as a whole.

She has chosen to cover some lesser renowned artist such as Laura Lee & Joe Simon on the CD. However, don't be fooled by all the classic tracks on the CD. The White Stripes song "Fell In Love With A Boy" also turns up on the CD.

Those who grew up on classic soul music, may have a hard time adjusting to Stone's CD. Just like any classic form of music, when someone comes in and tries to revamp something great for a new era there are bound to be critics. That is fine and in a way they are absolutely correct. Stone's freshman effort is beyond impressive. And maybe the risk of bringing soul into a new generation with new material was too much of a risk for a first time effort. If Stone's development as an artist can break through with original material in the future. She will become the winner all the way around. She will have shown she can do her own material, bring news fans to a genre of music that is timeless and win over the old fans of soul also.

This CD is an amazing listen.
