Incubus
- "A Crow Left Of The Murder"
by Linda Spielman
|
The long awaited release from Incubus has
been described by some fans as a double edged sword before its release.
Rumors that the CD would be something completely different from past efforts
such as S.C.I.E.N.C.E or Fungus/Enjoy had diehard fans in a tizzy about
the uncertainty of the new direction the CD might take, and if it would
live up to their expectations of the band as a whole. Some fans who had
the opportunity to hear tracks prerelease date acknowledged some clone-like
songs that mirrored previous songs from the band in their early years.
So, while the diehard fans of Incubus fight over the pros and cons of the
CD, how is someone who listens to the band maybe for the first time able
to develop an unbiased opinion on the newest project.
"A Crow left Of The Murder" is amazingly
produced by Brendan O'Brien. Having just radio airplay to go by from previous
releases by the group, I was astounded at the level of layering and mixing
on the CD. Brandon Boyd's voice has never sounded stronger. Have the vocals
to back some of the most intense lyrics out there in music, combined with
overall instrumental background of the band, I found this CD a great listen.
After talking to a few Incubus fans, the
consensus on their part, is that this CD is OK. If you are a first time
fan of the band due to the overwhelming radio success of "Megalomaniac",
then you may love this CD. But, many of the core Incubus fans feel there
are many gaps of musical consistency on this CD. To get a true feel for
the group's potential they suggest listening to their previous releases
first.
So, as a first time buyer, I enjoyed the
CD. Great to listen to in the car. The limited edition packaging also included
a bonus DVD of Lollapalooza, Bridge Benefit and some other Incubus extras;
without driving the price point higher. Out of 5 stars, this CD ranks about
3 in terms of a go out and buy recommendation.
