Free Verse

This album sounds so good on its own merit
that I hate to bring gender into the review. But having said that, let
me express my relief that, cool chicks can rock! (I hope I don't get beat
up for writing that.) The 3 punker girls comprising Free Verse scorch their
indelible mark onto the alt-punk scene with the release of "Generator",
their 2nd full length album. These socially conscious activists have lent
their talent to various causes such as AIDS Awareness, police brutality,
prison literacy and women's homeless shelters. I wonder if the backers
of these events became terrified by the audience suddenly turning into
a writhing, spasmodically jerking mosh pit full of freshly minted Free
Verse Appreciators.
"Generator" should be sought out by anyone
who likes punk music, or metal, or indy, or whatever. This album skillfully
straddles these musical genres effortlessly & melodically. If the slower
song & parts on the album kind of struggle, rest assured the reason
is that these players like to rock. The well played instruments, the shared
vocal duties, the original and excellent songs that rock hard all make
for an album that can't help but to seize your attention, and not for the
sake of novelty. With this release, Free Verse should lose their title
as the most underrated, unappreciated band in recent history. Maybe so
many sub- standard, all- girl, flavor of the month type bands have forever
tainted people's perceptions of how a girl band sounds. To cynically pass
over this CD for that reason would almost be criminal.
