Barenaked
Ladies - Everything For Everyone
By Linda Spielman
When it comes to being creatively twisted,
Barenaked Ladies are right at the top of the list along with the likes
of Weird Al Yankovic & Carrot Top.
Over the years the Canadian band has been
entertaining millions and developing a cult-like following which grows
in numbers with the release of each new CD.
“Everything For Everyone” is chalked full
of layered melodies, harmonies & quirky lyrics which puts the band
in a league all their own. However, the CD is more of a miss than hit.
Despite the expansive 14 tracks, only about four are noteworthy BNL gems.
"Maybe Katie, "Shopping, "Upside Down" & "Aluminum" are what most fans
would consider classic BNL. The eclectic lyrics, upbeat tempos, cultural
comparisons are what many are accustomed to hearing from the band. The
first release, "Another Postcard" is very reminiscent of the popular "One
Week".
Another unexpected element to the CD is
the melancholy track "War On Drugs", which is quite a departure from the
band’s primarily effervescent songs. The story of a young girl and her
consistent downward spiral of bad choices and drugs is a brutal wake up
call of a song positioned right in the middle of the CD’s track listing.
For diehard BNL fans, this is probably
a great listen. However, for the everyday music buying Joe Public, they
might want to just purchase the CD singles as they are released.
