Slayer – Soundtrack To The Apocalypse
The Hobo review

Slayer. Without a doubt the single greatest metal band ever to scorch this infinitely unworthy earth. Slayer truly are the Christopher Walken of thrash – and still some 20 years after the band first formed, they still exist – and still brutally annihilate any opposition to their crown. Other metal greats who once sought to challenge these gods – Anthrax, Metallica, Testament, Megadeth – have either burnt out, sold out or just simply faded away into mediocrity.

No band unites its fans under such a brotherhood as Slayer. If another fan sees you walking down the street with a Reign In Blood shirt, he’ll respect you. The bond is almost instant, and more often than not, the true fan will buy you a beer or at least give one piercing scream of ‘SLAYER’ before leaving you alone.

The box set itself consists of 4 CD’s, 1 DVD and some other ‘bonus’ gear. The first disc acts as a ‘best of’ compilation from Reign In Blood to Seasons In The Abyss with a few tracks from Decade Of Aggression thrown in. The first disc is, in effect what I like to call ‘The Lombardo Years.’ The second disc similarly is a ‘best of’ compilation of the  Bostaph years – from Divine Intervention to God Hates Us All with a few other tracks off soundtracks thrown in.

The third disc holds a total shiatload of rarities from demos, remixes, rehersals and live recordings. The DVD is basically the same kind of shin dig as Cliff ‘Em All – a little documentary of the band with live clips from when the boys still wore makeup. It hasn’t got the best sound quality, being not compatible with 5.1 DSS – so if you want an awesome live show, grab War At The Warfield.

The final CD is a collection of live tracks – Live With Dave Lombardo. I do believe the CD was complied back in 1991 just before Dave left. Some of the random extra’s include; a cool banner, a backstage laminate, and awesome blood pack cd cover.

This box set is simply the best thing to come out in music. To those borderline fans that think the cash is a bit more than one could fork out – f*** it, buy it. Any fan of any loyalty that has ever liked or tapped along to one Slayer song absent-mindedly, needs to get this box set. Everyone needs to buy this f***ing box set. It’s perfect – it’s better than perfect. It offers a sense of empowerment no drug can offer. It offers enormous amounts of ‘street-cred’ with the brotherhood. It offers violence, melody, musicianship and ecstasy. Hell, if anyone pays attention to my words and buys it – I’ll shout them a beer at the Winsor sometime. Dead set.

I don’t care if you have to sell your liver to get the Soundtrack To The Apocalypse…

Just get it.
