Nicole Atkins - Bleeding Diamonds EP Review
by Ashleigh Hill
.
As an introduction to Nicole Atkin's upcoming Columbia Records full length album, Bleeding Diamonds serves as a perfect plate of gorgeous examples iced with a dreamy display of lyrics and keys. The New Jersey native, Atkins seems to be floating onto the scene with a listing on Rolling Stone's "Top 10 Artists to Watch", and one heck of an EP to push. The elegance in Atkin's orchestral accompaniment and the modern, Julie Andrews-esque vocals tie Bleeding Diamonds together into a complete package of six comparable, yet individual cuts. The innocent keys supporting "Snowshakes", a blissful pop tune with a classical bend, gracefully bear the cleanliness of Atkins singing and the circus-themed piano of "Carouselle" ironically washes over croons of "here comes the wrecking ball" creating a thorough compilation in just two songs. Living up to this set expectation, the rest of the CD procures a fluid illustration of what Atkin's is capable of and what, hopefully, is to come. Fans of Over the Rhine and Elani Mandell should, without delay, check out Bleeding Diamonds and everything else Nicole Atkins decides to share in the upcoming years.
