Lovedrug - Everything Starts Where it Ends Review

by J Simpson

.
Lovedrug is an indie rock band formed in 2001 by Michael Shepard in Canton, Ohio. After a successful launch of a self titled 5 song demo in 2002 and a 6 track "Rocknroll EP" in 2003 which garnered much recognition, the band spewed forth their first album "Pretend Your Alive" in 2004 which proceeded to solidify the opinion their loyal fans had, and also became their labels (Militia Group) fastest selling album ever landing at #3 on the Billboard internet Chart and #43 on Independent Charts. A little over 2 years later they have released their sophomore album titled "Everything Starts Where It Ends".

"Everything Starts Where It Ends" released in March 2007 is an an epic type album which sends the listener on a emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows, (leaning more towards the lows) and brings the bands musical carousel of angst filled lyrics and alluring but sometimes haunting melodies to light. Slightly more rock oriented than their first release and displaying a bit more main stream or radio friendly music with strong guitar work and delicate piano compositions scattered throughout the 12 song collection. Shepards artsy vocals are hard to categorize or contain, often they are beautiful and elegant as in the songs "Dancing" or the title track of the disc and then on occasion he sounds like a pissed off Keebler elf, like in "Salt of the Earth" or "American Swimming Lessons" however they always come forth as honest and true to his heart.

From the very first notes of the disc you hear echoes of Radiohead and other times the sounds of Muse or Coldplay which harkens to the fact that this may be true indie rock with a sonic edge but its nothing extremely new. The album seems to get tired or slightly stale prematurely after a few listens, with nothing to grab you and make you keep wanting to shove the disc back in the player. While Lovedrug have shown that they know how to write songs, in the end this disc is just another somewhat better than average indie disc that gets lost in the endless sea of other indie albums.

Fans of Lovedrug take heed considering the band definitely shows that they are on the right track and in time they seem to have the potential to create more memorable stand out music, its also been said that their live performance is really something to experience.
