The Comfies – Close To Me Review
by Patrick Muldowney
.
The Comfies is a fitting name, in that listening to them is not painful in the slightest. The problem is that it is also painless to lack feeling and thought; the exact extent to which Close To Me stimulates the cerebrum. Listening to The Comfies is akin to listening to The Romantics circa 1980, except "Close to Me" is not the classic "What I Like About You" is, and the drummer does not have the wherewithal to pull off milk on his drumheads. The highlights of the Close To Me EP are the title track, a single finely crafted for foot-tapping and involuntarily memorable lyrics through aptly placed repetition, and "Your Sunshine", featuring a moment of original ingenuity as two bars of beat box count in the band. Considering the strict pop rock of The Comfies, beat boxing should seem odd and forced, but the risk is rewarded and welcomed here as they make the beat a rhythmic presence throughout the song. "Your Sunshine" might be a precursor for how The Comfies could continue their simple formula without being so predictable. Close To Me is a collection of tracks that deserve about as much time as they took to create, which means they will be easily remembered and quickly forgotten.Tracks added to iPod: None
