80 Proof - Shenanigans Review

by Morley Seaver

.
Mix some 311 with Los Lonely Boys and you get 80 Proof, a fun-loving, energetic band that blends rock with reggae and traces of other styles. Their EP Shenanigans is a solid affair that scores well on all counts, songwriting, performance and enthusiasm. There is enough diversity in the record to hold your interest, yet they all fit into the same nest comfortably.

The first cut "Whiskey Beats" is almost rock/dancehall, alternating the mood throughout. Vocalist Evan Manriquez has a really engaging voice and he draws you in as the song builds. "Mexico" begins with a Spanish guitar that is really beautiful before going into possibly the best song on the record. The closing cut "Dadoodle-a-doot" is one of those campfire songs the girls will like and it's energized by the uplifting guitar.

This band shows a lot of promise and in the meantime, Shenanigans is a fun record that should help you deal with winter until the heat comes back.
