Whirlwind Heat - Types of Wood Review

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
"I dropped my pants/And started to dance." That's just part of the description given by Whirlwind Heat's Moog-man and lead singer, Swanson, in the song "Gene Pool Style." But for this dance the tune's character has his hands full---and not with his partner either---as he prepares to fill a test tube at the sperm bank. Complete with a little heavy breathing, the rhythmic number would be quite suitable for actual dancing as well as, uh, donating. Swanson sings with a sort of I-couldn't-give-a-s*** deadpan that while not quite Lou Reed makes him a fun listen on the neo-psychedelic "My Electric Underwear" and the band's nod to the Violent Femmes, "The Sun is Round." Discovered a few years back by Jack White, Whirlwind Heat are a trio (Steve Damstra II/bass, Brad Holland/drums) and they specialize in a quirkiness that comes not only from Swanson's vocals but his spacey keyboard riffs and Holland's off-kilter pounding. These songs tend to catch you off guard at first but after a few listens you'll know and love your Types of Wood.
