We Are Scientists - With Love and Squalor

The three piece outfit We Are Scientists makes "rock music of the thoughtful, sometimes epic, often loud, vaguely danceable, implicitly humanist variety." That really sums them up quite nicely. I would add the words bouncy, electrifying, and stimulating as well. We Are Scientists have a few EP's out, but this is their first full-length, and it's quite a nice little musical showpiece.Reminiscent of bands like the Killers and Franz Ferdinand with ten times the energy, these guys make exceptionally catchy music with a minimalist approach to a traditional band setup with just one lead guitar, one bass guitar and a drum kit. Frontman Keith Murray's complimenting vocals are playful, and slide perfectly in and out of the guitar leads and bass riffs, blending it all together with near perfection. Tracks come at you one after another relentlessly, and don't stop until the disc has finished spinning, leaving you on your butt in a dizzy fog. Standouts would include the whole record; most of these tracks have single potential. Try "Callbacks" if you want some hard-hitting, noisy, rowdy rock music. Skip to "Textbook" if you want more of a dramatic, melancholy, almost sad feel to your music. Play "Worth the Wait" if you're yearning for a Bloc Party style rocker, or just play the whole album to hear one of the best alternative, post-punk-type records you've heard so far this year.
