The Kickbacks - Motel Stars Review

You know that friend you have whose cool and talented in one way or another, gets along with everyone, and usually says the right thing? Usually, except sometimes no one's really sure if he's being serious, joking, or drinking a little too much before noon? The Kickbacks are that guy. Catchy music, genuine, earnest vocals wailing, "I got a lazy eyes/ it don't like to look away when you walk by". I've never heard of inebriated pick-up lines morphing into song lyrics, but now I realize it's entirely possible and even recordable. Above the overlying well-practiced college-shenanigans band persona rises the subtle "Fixed to be Broken: and "Lights Flicker". Below it settles "Tip My Girl", ode to a stripper, and "Collect Calling for You" which covers love through a topic no one should really be writing songs solely about. Bottom Line - Tad Overbaugh's Billy Corgan-tinged vocals match the mellow yet enthused surrounding band to a tee. Everybody likes "that guy", especially the Snow Patrol, Better than Ezra type, some just like hanging around him more often.
