Pet Shop Boys - Fundamental Review
by Sherrill Fulghum
.
The Boys are back! Fundamental is their first new album in a number of years. The British duo of Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant first hit the music scene in 1985 with "West End Girls". The album cover for Fundamental follows the album's name and is a simple black affair; but what's inside on the CD is far from simple. The Boys weave their magic with numerous traditional instruments and electronic manipulation to create their unique sound of techno dance music. Mixed in with the electronically synthesized music are some wonderful orchestrations and melodies. The music on "Fundamental" is far more than just dance music; the album is filled with some incredible orchestrations and arrangements. Amidst the fast paced dance tunes are some beautiful pieces like "I Made My Excuses and Left" and "Luna Park". "Fundamental" is dedicated to two Ahwaz Arab teen-age boys from Iran who were executed in 2005. The boys were accused of being homosexuals. My first impression on hearing this album was WOW! An outstanding piece of work from The Pet Shop Boys.
