Paul Wilkes - They've Got Nothing on You (EP) Review

by Ashleigh Hill

.
Performed by Paul Wilkes and The Drunken Boat, it's safe to say that They've Got Nothing on You is a needed step away from the ordinary. Beginning with the Dylan-edged "Your Face it Cracks", Wilkes offers up a four-song EP stuffed full of steely guitars and an unfailing bass, swaying around, under and between a voice quality that few have achieved. The soft "They've Got Nothing on You" melts into the mellow, yet poignant, "In the End", and together they close the EP with a forlorn, camp-fire-esque "Your Words Fill the Air". They've Got Nothing on You is four songs that hold their own, and hold onto each other in a pattern only a well-devised artist can fashion. Fans of Dylan, Cash, or John Francis will inevitably agree; Paul Wilkes is here to stay.
