Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship - Blows against the Empire Review
By Kevin Wierzbicki
.
Seminal San Francisco band the Jefferson Airplane was pretty much history in 1970 when founder Paul Kantner put out this "solo" record. But Kantner was far from alone, working here with his on again/off again squeeze Grace Slick, David Crosby and Graham Nash, and Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart and Billy Kreutzman from the Grateful Dead. He christened the amalgam Jefferson Starship, but this music is still Airplane-ish---Jefferson Starship would not become power-pop hit makers until a half decade later. It is a testament to Kantner's vision that this effort stands up 35 years later; his prayers for peace and tolerance and his wide-eyed wonderment as to what's to come are still relevant today. Many who listened to this album back in the day were fond of altering themselves chemically but unfamiliar listeners will find themselves on a pleasant and memorable trip without any such enhancement. Five previously unreleased tunes from these sessions round off this re-issue.Track Listing: Mau Mau (Amerikon) The Baby Tree Let's Go Together A Child is Coming Sunrise Hijack Home Have You Seen the Stars Tonite X-M Starship Bonus Tracks: Let's Go Together (alternate lyrics) Sunrise (Grace's acoustic demo) Hijack (Paul's acoustic demo) SFX (Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart) Starship (live)
