On The Last Day - Meaning In The Static Review

by Jeff K.

.
On The Last Day, Victory Records newest roster band, takes some getting used to. Upon checking out the cd and bio, I completely expected an AFI ripoff, mostly due to the excessive amounts of mascara in the band picture, along with matching 'emo' haircuts. A bit too cliché for me, right off the bat.

While the band is indeed not an AFI ripoff, they certainly aren't hardcore, like they have been pegged as being. I'm not even sure they live up to their self-described 'post-hardcore' label. There is plenty of Boy Sets Fire influence here, however, which would be a good thing if they didn't sound like they were EXACTLY like BSF.

While the songs here aren't bad musically, they aren't mind-blowing either. OTLD blends plenty of their influences, which isn't a bad thing. They just seem to fall a little bit short of the mark. They'll garner plenty of respect among the Victory crowd, but probably not much more beyond that.
