Nuclear Assault - Louder Harder Faster Review

by James Rodd

.
Nuclear Assault have always been one of my favorite "speed metal/thrash" bands. The thing that set them apart in my book was the fact that John Connelly could actually sing. Oh, and then there was the fact they too hailed from NYC, forever my home no matter where I hang my hat.

I remember when Anthrax played the Battle of the Bands way before they were famous, in the Bronx, NY. If I'm not mistaken Danny Lilker was a member of Anthrax then. And he jumped ship for something heavier. Folks I don't know if you remember early Anthrax but they were pretty heavy. Nuclear Assault is definitely heavier. Though, I guess not as mainstream successful as Anthrax, and I think they're all the better for it.

I didn't know Nuclear Assault released and album last year and you can bet I already ran to FMV and bought it. I thought they had gone the way of the Dodo.

The DVD is excellent. Nuclear Assault still kicks ass. They're playing is still excellent. Age has not slowed the licks or the pounding drums. Though I have to admit visually they are the worse for wear but then who of us isn't.

The intimacy of the small club and the sound choices of 2.0 or 5.1 Dolby surround sound make for a great mix. You get to feel like your there. Darken the living room, put the kids and your grandma out of the room and turn up the surround sound and you'll see what I mean.

John Connelly still sounds great and the band hasn't missed a beat over time. Honestly I think they may be playing better. The extras on the DVD left a bit to be desired, though the pictures were cool, and overall the packaging and production could have been better. But then Nuclear Assault were never the polished act like Metallica or that ilk, maybe its better that things are still done to NA's best standard and not to everyone else's. Shred on Nuclear Assault!
