Kevin Devine - Put Your Ghost to Rest Review

by Gary Schwind

.
This album is filled with rich mostly acoustic arrangements of guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and strings. To call them songs would be selling Devine short. These are more like poems set to music, similar to Josh Rouse and Adam Mugavero.

Devine is a great storyteller. Probably the best example of this is in "A Billion Bees." This is a song filled with rich imagery and a great narrative set to music. He follows "A Billion Bees" with "Less Yesterday, More Today," which has the sort of ethereal country sound you might find on a Grandaddy album. Plus, it includes a good lesson I think we could all take to heart. "Less yesterday and more today / yeah, I gotta start living that way."

I expect a lot of good things from Kevin Devine. He is a very talented songwriter and musician. This is a very good CD with 12 strong tracks. If you are a fan of singer-songwriters, particularly Josh Rouse and Adam Mugavero, you will really enjoy this album.
