Ester Drang - Rocinate Review
By Rob Nipe
.
There are moments on Ester Drang's third album, Rocinate. Slivers of time that are captured. It is in those moments that you can picture in your mind's eye the best part of the best movie ever. The wonderful marriage of sound and sight that you carry with you for the rest of your life. But those moments are few and far between. Often compared to the Flaming Lips simply because they are both from Oklahoma, Ester Drang doesn't come close to achieving the ambitious, experimental heights of the Flaming Lips. They seem to play it safe. (The Flaming Lips would be Ester Drang turned to 11.) Of course, one could argue that Ester Drang doesn't want to be the Flaming Lips but songs like "Hooker With a Heart of Gold", "Caledonia" and "White Lies" bear close enough resemblance that people are talking. And, frankly, I don't think it would a bad way to go. This album doesn't seem to ever get out of the low gear. It would be a Vespa on the highway when you really need a Harley. You're along for the ride but you're going to feel every mile…slowly.
