El Presidente Review

by Sherrill Fulghum

.
This Glasgow based quintet known as El Presidente have achieved what is known as an overnight success. While individual band members have been playing for years; the band itself has taken the musical world by storm. After playing only eight gigs together El Presidente was invited to perform at the famous Glastonbury Festival. They have also been asked to open for Simple Minds in their home town and to open for the likes of Oasis and Duran Duran. And, oh yeah, Ian Gallagher thinks they're fantastic.

El Presidente founder and frontman Dante got inspiration for the songs on the band's self-titled debut album from the customers at the bistro where he worked and owns with his siblings. Dante had only one rule when writing songs - there are no rules. As a result the album has no one set style. Dante wanted the songs to be fresh. On stage band members don't dress the part of a typical rocker in jeans and t-shirts. Dante believes that a band's appearance is as important as the music and in putting on a show; therefore, band members tend to dress up.

El Presidente has been called Scotland's Scissor Sisters. Dante thinks it's a compliment but doesn't see it other than having girls in the band - drums and keyboards. El Presi-dente can party and rock with the best of them. They can also be on the funky side. Want something a little different? Then El Presidente's self-titled album is just the ticket.
