Dio - Holy Diver Live DVD Review

by Zane Ewton

.
Along with the CD release of the live performance of Holy Diver from a London stop on the Master of the Moon tour, Dio has unleashed the visual companion for our viewing pleasure. The DVD includes the concert in its entirety as well as an interview montage of the Dio band discussing the tour, the special Holy Diver shows and how well Europe has embraced the band, well into their 20-plus year career.

For all of those fans who have spent years debating the origin of Dio's famed "devil-horns" hand sign, you will be pleased to hear the story from the man himself. Unfortunately the true story is always much less dramatic than the myths surrounding the event.

The actual concert is quintessential Dio. The band and the fans are having fun. Besides the epic Holy Diver performed top to bottom the band pulls off a few surprises from the Rainbow and Black Sabbath years. Beyond the required "Heaven and Hell" and "Man on the Silver Mountain", Dio treats are aplenty with "Tarot Woman", "The Sign of the Southern Cross" and "Long Live Rock and Roll."

The video is shot anywhere from in the pit to along Dio's right hand side, placing the viewer directly in the action. Close-ups on band member's solos and signature moments demonstrate a band in top form. Dio live makes for a fantastic show but the special circumstances make this particular show that much more enjoyable.

In an era of overblown DVD extras, this bare-bones disc may seem skimpy. It's 100 percent quality rock show otherwise, something you won't get with some bands.
