Citrus - Oh Well EP

Citrus was formed in early 2000 in L.A. by four Denmark natives. Their debut album Largo Divine made #19 on CMJ's "Most Added in the Country" chart during the first week of its release. With many chart-topping singles that lingered for months and several tours later, Citrus releases the energetic EP Oh Well, which, for a five-song EP shows quite a range of styles and talent. The opener "Potential" is an attention grabber, and those who hear it will probably not forget who Citrus is for some time to come. The simple, floating guitar riff grabs you by the throat and demands your attention. Lead vocalist Jesper Andreasson has a great voice, and it sounds very natural throughout the entire EP. "Oh Well" strolls into a Radiohead-like breakdown, vocals and all. Oh yeah, and proves that Andreasson can scream. The song is raw and irreverent on first listen, but then opens itself up after three or four more and presents layer upon layer of near perfect studio production and songwriting. The rest of this EP contains some fairly catchy material, including some hand claps, grinding guitar, wispy finger strums, decent percussion, and some great vocals from the rest of the band that harmonize very well. Especially in "Nothing But a Liar", which opens with a spacey and hushed little guitar solo, builds up to a climatic explosion, then quiets down again with a sudden hint of awe. Hopefully a soon-to-follow full-length will again prove that these guys very much deserve to be in the spotlight and continue harvesting great sounds and writing meaningful music.
