Carey Ott - Lucid Dream Review

.
If you crave a steaming cup of coffee when you listen to your new Carey Ott CD it's probably because you first heard his music while waiting on line at Starbucks. But Ott doesn't make music to go with a caffeine-soaked, harried commute to work---this is Saturday morning-relaxed-warm and fuzzy stuff and the title Lucid Dream sums the feeling up nicely. "I Wouldn't Do That to You," "Am I Just One" and several other songs on Lucid Dream bring the pop perfection of Matthew Sweet to mind but Ott's work mostly fits in with the large, currently hip group of singer/songwriters that includes artists as disparate as Ben Jelen, Jack Johnson and James Blunt. He's from Chicago and obviously doesn't have a British accent but Ott's styling on "Virginia" makes it clear that he's heard his share of Paul McCartney. The bucolic tune echoes the state's catch-phrase at its end ("Virginia is for lovers") and the whole lover's vibe is what Ott is aiming for. If you want to kick out the jams look elsewhere; if you want to spend some personal time with your very best friend you won't mind Ott tagging along.
