Bob Seger - Face the Promise Review
by Zane Ewton
.
A few artists go away with all the pomp and circumstance of an overbloated, never-ending farewell tour and the fourth incarnation of a cash-in greatest hits disc. A few have the class and dignity to just go. After 1995's It's a Mystery Bob Seger simply went home to be with his family and raise his children. A silence of 11 years can be devastating in the entertainment world. Bob Seger always played by his own rules though and let the music do the talking. So, why should it be any different this time around? Earlier this year Seger was nominated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a recognition that is rightfully deserved. Promises of a new studio album began to circulate and in September Face the Promise was released. Seger did do things a little differently this time around. Some songs date back as far as five years or more, he chose to record in Nashville instead of his native Detroit, and he employed studio musicians instead of his classic backup, the Silver Bullet Band. Fortunately, this is not a subdued country album with staid session players. This is simply vintage Bob Seger rock and roll music. That gruff voice is still undeniable and he brings 12 top notch songs to the table. After 11 years, it's safe to suppose he had a few gems cooking in that time. The praise has been heaped upon Face the Promise. It deserves the praise. Seger has never been concerned with style or trends. He just makes memorable, timeless rock and roll records with elements of R&B, Motown, country and everything else a Detroit-bred rock star would incorporate. Face the Promise is a breath of fresh air when tight pants and black nail polish is the norm in rock music. Now if we could just get him to tour with the Silver Bullet Band and show the emo kids real passion in music. [ed note: Bob announced a tour the day after this review was turned in.]
