Anushka Pop - Akathena Review
by Rob Nipe
.
There is a strong opening to Akathena. "Gurlfriend" is everything that is right with Anushka Pop. It is a high energy song that falls into the vein of earlier Weezer or Ozma. I think if this were put on the radio, Anushka Pop could potentially have a hit on their hands. The problem with the album is that the rest of it doesn't support that momentum. Starting at "Akathena", the third track on the album, you start hitting speed bumps. It isn't actually a slower song just not as interesting a sound as the first two. The majority of the song is based on only two chords and those two chords grow old. And when a song is only a little over two minutes long, there really shouldn't be a point where I look at my watch. I appreciate the fact that Anushka Pop has gone out of their way to include seven songs on this Ep but the uneven nature of those songs makes me wonder if perhaps a single would have been more apropos. I look forward to hearing more from the group that created the first two songs. I know there must be more like that to be heard.
