The Format - Snails Review
by Kevin Wierzbicki
.
The Format splashed into the alternative scene a couple years ago with an effervescent little ditty called "Tune Out." If you liked that song, you'll probably like just about everything the duo of Sam Means and Nate Reuss put out. The pair has a great collective ear for sparkling pop that reminds of the best work of Matthew Sweet; a sort of sophisticated bubblegum. Snails is a five song E.P. with two new songs; the jangly "Janet" and the winsome, loping, pedal-steel enhanced title cut. The disc is rounded out with acoustic versions of three songs from the band's only album, Interventions & Lullabies. The unplugged cuts are great if you're already a fan but they don't stand up to the original versions. Perhaps with that in mind, this E.P. has a distribution (or lack thereof) strictly for fans. It is only available at concerts (the Format are currently not touring) or from the band's Website (where it is temporarily unorderable). Some copies can be found in stores in the band's hometown, Phoenix, and a few other locations around the country (see listing on Website).
