Emmanuel - Endless Road
Part of Tommy Emmanuel’s biography is that
he is one of only three Certified Guitar Players (CGP) in the world.
Jerry Reed and John Knowles are the others, in case you’re wondering.
I’m not really sure what one has to do to become a CGP but I’m telling
you this, if anyone deserves that title, it’s Tommy Emmanuel.
“Endless Road” is almost all instrumental
with mostly folk and classical sounds. He moves easily from a Chet
Atkins song (“Chet’s Ramble”) to standards like “Mona Lisa” and “Somewhere
Over the Rainbow.” Also included on this album are two songs written
by Jerry Reed, “Today Is Mine” and “Struttin’.”
One thing you’ll notice about Emmanuel
is that he is a tremendous guitarist. The most remarkable song on
this album is “Tall Fiddler,” a bluegrass song. Tommy basically plays
every part you would expect to hear in a bluegrass song. Only he
doesn’t need any accompaniment. He does it all on his guitar.
The amount of notes he packed into that song is dizzying. You may
have to listen to that one more than once just to know you’re hearing it
right.
On some songs like “Morning Aire,” Emmanuel
reminds me of Adrian Legg. There is one big difference between the
two though. Emmanuel doesn’t run nearly as many effects as Adrian
Legg. What they have in common is that they both produce extraordinarily
clean and amazing sounds.
“Endless Road” is an amazing album by an
amazing artist. You don’t have to be a guitar player to appreciate
this album but I think all you guitar players out there will really enjoy
this CD. There aren’t to many guys out there that can pick a guitar
like Tommy Emmanuel.
