Reel Big
Fish - We’re Not Happy ’Til You’re Not Happy
By Kevin Wierzbicki
Not quite a stinker, but this new release
from Reel Big Fish is the sound of a band just about out of ideas. Ironically,
the two most interesting songs here, although done tongue-in-cheek, are
about failing in the music business. On “Don’t Start a Band” singer Aaron
Barrett has a dozen reasons to back up his advice, including, “No one will
show up, your songs all suck; you won’t get paid, you won’t get laid.”
A song about beating the ‘sophomore slump,’ “One Hit Wonderful,” is delivered
with an admirable devil-may-care joyousness that belies the song’s desperation.
Other than these two, the set list is immediately forgettable, including
the three covers added to pad the album’s length. First comes a horrendous
cover of Morrissey’s “We Hate it When our Friends become Successful” that
would have Mozzy rolling in his grave if he were dead. He might be after
one listen. A version of Tracy Chapman’s “Talkin’ ’Bout a Revolution” is
also ill-advised while there is some redeeming value to RBF’s take on Social
D.’s “Story of my Life.” So much for the theory that a ska beat will make
anything sound good. RBF is a great party band live and they’ll probably
rack up some sales on this one to audience members who’ve tipped a fair
share of brewskies. Otherwise it’ll get thrown back. If you do pick up
a copy, here’s a hint: put aside about ten minutes to find and listen to
the hidden track.
