Vanguard:
Elefant - Sunshine Makes Me Paranoid
By Keelan Kirby
Elefant's new album is the very intriguing
and catchy Sunshine Makes Me Paranoid. It has a kind of melodious
flow that carries the CD and each song harmoniously blends into the next,
in such a way that you cant seem to turn it off. The CD is in no
way flawless however, many new bands carry the 'lack of originality' curse
and Elefant is no exception. However this seems to be overlooked
by Diego Garcia's soothing voice and enchanting delivery.
The album also, at first glance, seems
to be monotonous in lyrics, however at closer inspection you can see that
the album is telling a story. After listening to this album many
times over I feel as if I am picking up Diego's diary and reading stories
from his life. As the stories unfold I see that this album is an
epic love story.
The story is delivered using an upbeat
tempo complemented by Diego's melodramatic voice. However, the album
is at the same time very emotionally draining, for example, "Annie" carries
the continuous up beat tempo of the album yet, the song is very despairing.
It is a song of great loss and can leave you feeling empty, with a great
many questions lingering in your mind.
Elefant is an elegant album with Coldplay
influence readily apparent. This album seems to follow Coldplay's
stylish harmony and soothing lyrics. Still, on closer examination
you can also decipher influence on the part of The Cure. All in all
this is a must have album for music lovers and should be in every library.
After listening to the album once you will find yourself humming along
and won't be able to forget the hauntingly romantic lyrics.
