Children of the Risk - Solution X Review
by Eric Bodrero
.
Influenced by such bands as R.E.M, The Pretenders and Iggy Pop, Michael James and Children of the Risk sound more like an afternoon jam session with Phish than anything. Pounding guitars, tongue-in-cheek vocals and rockabilly anthems blaze a trail on all fifteen tracks of his sophomore set Solution X. Although certain elements of Michael's modern rock influences such as Blink 182, Sugarcult, Zebrahead and Papa Roach shine through, especially in tracks such as "It's What We Do", "Don't Do That", and "Drownin'", it's mostly a sound unlike any you've ever heard. Michael's vocal style may turn some off, but the jangly guitar hooks, bass as smooth as butter, and catchy rhythms should stand as a musical icon for garage band startups.
