Joe Strummer - Walker Soundtrack (reissue) Review

When I was first offered this to review, I wasn't too excited. I figured it would be just some tunes from "Global A Go Go" or "Streetcore" repackaged with some other bands I never want to hear. Yes, obviously until now I never heard of this film. Though from what I've read about it, it sounds like something I want to see. Now this cd isn't Joe actually playing, at least the credits don't have him listed as playing any instruments on here, but he does do a bit of the vocals.(most of this is instrumental)."The unknown immortal" has a good bit of Joe's vocals on it. This cd isn't one you put on if you want to rock out and smash things up ala the clash. Rather this is all acoustic. Very atmospheric. During a lot of the songs you could close your eyes and imagine yourself sitting outside an old west saloon, drink in your hand and a revolver in your belt. Others make you think of a great horse chase (the precursor to the car chase. unfortunately everyone drove a mustang. ha ha get it? mustang? horse?) Joe was supposedly a big fan of the spaghetti western and really who isn't? This music would be right at home in one of Sergio's films. It makes me want to go out for some old fashioned western revenge just writing about it. Though, since the law frowns on old west revenge nowadays, this is a great album to just relax to. I know I took the quote in the liner to heart: "its all acoustic, I thought let's be 1850. Nothing plugged in," I poured a glass of my favorite drink from the 1800's and let the music take me where it may. Nifty stuff.
