Menthol Hill - Disfigured Live Review
by Kevin Wierzbicki
.
Menthol Hill broke up back in 2002 and that is when this disc was originally released. The leftover k_pod copies are currently being promoted anew by the Tart Garage label based on the fact that former Menthol Hill creative soul Eric Forst is also the leader of Tart Garage act Jakarta Skyscraper, a group that has a brand new release. So you can call this a re-release or a coat-tail release, whichever pleases you; Forst and company are hoping you will call it a forgotten treasure. Eight musicians share the credits with Forst, including drummer Brian Glascock (the Motels). But the spotlight is on the vocal work of Forst and his female counterpart, Kedron Parker. At times the band tunes into a spacey, Magnolia Electric Co.-like alt-country vibe ("Check out your Mind") and Parker channels a little Emmylou Harris on "Stabbed Angel." But for the most part, Disfigured Live, (which is not a live recording) is more Athens than Austin; recalling at times the early work of the Swimming Pool Q's. A few tracks, esp ecially "How the Allies Smashed the Japanese Empire" go over-the-top with art-school cacophony and leave the listener a bit disoriented. The musicianship here is excellent but Menthol Hill did not make music for mass consumption; you may or may not be someone who "gets it."
