Jakarta Skyscraper - Jakarta Skyscraper Review

Denise Bonis and Eric Forst are the vocalists for Jakarta Skyscraper, and also two-thirds of its whole. Drummer Mark Mastopietro completes the trio, and he grabs the spotlight on track one, but not in the way you might think. No fancy solo, no showy polyrhythm from Mastopietro; but rather a discordant beat that sounds something akin to a yeti plodding his way home through three feet of packed snow. The off-kilter cadence is oddly alluring, so much so that it takes a few listens to be able to focus on Bonis' vocals. It's her show until half way through the third song, "These Guitars," where Forst adds his dulcet tones. That tune is just a warm-up, though, for the disc's highlight, "Stars are Down," where both singers ride a magic carpet that soars and dips through clouds of incense, building to multiple crescendos before gently floating back to earth. Bonis plays the violin on the song and that combined with the way the duo sing with delicate urgency puts them on par with the sublime work of David and Linda LaFlamme of "It's A Beautiful Day". The similarly dreamy "Railroad Gin" closes this impressive release.
