Illbreak - The Flood Review
by Dan Upton
.
Illbreak may not be the most appropriate name for these guys from Atlanta, since I'd say they caught a pretty lucky break winning a "Search for the Next Rock Star" contest and got signed to a label formed by one of the guitarists for 3 Doors Down. (Sorry, somebody had to make the joke.) This CD is another on my quickly-growing list of "have to listen to it more than once"--a combination of the voice and songwriting style pretty much makes the CD scream we-want-to-rip-off-Live the first time through. I was also initially turned off by the fact that some of the riffing is rather simplistic; for instance, the opening riff on "Mermaid Song" reminds me of something I came up with not long after I picked up a guitar. Subsequent listens to the disc lend them a little more credibility as songwriters, and there's no denying that a lot of the songs are catchy. If you're into Live, particularly Secret Samadhi-era, you'll probably love this; even if not, there are some pretty interesting songs like "Flesh and Bone" and "No Time At All" that are sure to please people into modern rock with a little bit of experimentation. After the first listen, my complaint was that it seemed like a rip-off; now my only major complaint is that at 10 tracks and slightly under 40 minutes, it's a bit short. As a debut this is fairly strong, and I'd say that if they can keep it up you can expect good things from Illbreak.
