Electrocute - Troublesome Bubblegum Review

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
This release has been around for a little over a year but it is just now seeing the light of day in the States. But you may already know the work of this Berlin duo if you're a fan of Spongebob Squarepants (just admit it!) as the girls had their song "Bikini Bottom" featured on the soundtrack of the cartoon character's movie. Don't be fooled into thinking this is kid stuff though; adolescent for sure but risqué lyrics in songs like "Fun is a Floppy Bitch," "Cops Copulating," "Shag Ball" and "Blow It" are not for tender ears. Really not for ears that are too mature either. As the title Troublesome Bubblegum implies, Nicole (guitar, vox, keys and beatbox) and Mia (vox) are purveying fluff here. Fun for a few songs, but the bad-girl cotton candy wears a little thin as the disc progresses. Even the girls get bored with the sex talk by disc's end, violently changing the subject for "Car Bomb Derby." According to the band's Website a new girl has come on board since the release of this record so it might be worth checking out the Electrocute camp in the future. Sometimes growing up a little is a good thing.
