Cantankerous - Cantankerous Review
by Kevin Wierzbicki
.
Cantankerous is also the name of this group's lead singer, and from the sound of the five songs on this debut E.P., she lives up to her moniker. "Make Money" is a great dance track set to a space-ragga beat featuring fuzzed out guitar, other-worldly keys riffs and rapid-fire vocals from Cantankerous. She gets her monetary message across with repetition of the line "Who's making money/who's making money now." Except that the "who" comes out as "ooh" which makes the refrain sound especially "coo." The band is British, but it's hard to tell if Cantankerous is a Cockney or if she is just affecting a Jamaican bent to enhance the flavor of the ragga-rock. Whatever the reason, the accent is heavy throughout, as is the bass work from Argent. Some programmed blips and a few dub techniques, a little Missing Persons meets the Plasmatics; a lot of rock'n'roll attitude from Cantankerous. This E.P. is just an appetizer until the full blown disc come outs in 2006 and maybe I shouldn't tell you this, but I'm terrible when it comes to keeping secrets. They wear masks!
