Bullistic - Chronicles of Love & Hate Review

Okay everybody, get out a bottle of whisky, grab your air guitar, crank it up to 11, and get ready to rock out. Richmond, VA-based Bullistic are here to fill in the gaps in your hard rock collection. They cite bands like Black Label Society and Clutch as influences, and they have the groove-based southern hard rock down pat--a lot of this CD reminds me of Brand New Sin's debut, from the distorted Les Paul sound and riffing to vocalist Doug Gibson's grungy vocals. Some of the songs are positively dripping with waggering attitude, including the standout track "Doomsday's Coming" and an interesting cover of Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle With You." There are a few slower, moody songs which are hit-or-miss: "Ignorance & Innocence," for instance, is a strong song to chill out on in between the strutting rockers; "Discarded Soul," on the other hand, tries too hard to rely on cleaner, "more emotional" vocals for the mood and they're just not there. Bullistic won't be taking over the charts or stealing Zakk Wylde's place on the Ozzfest stage anytime soon, but there are some solid tracks here and plenty of potential--all they have to do is infuse a little more originality to get away from getting called out as completely ripping off their influences. If you're a fan of any of the previously mentioned bands, you'll probably enjoy this one too.
