The thing with music nowadays is certain
genres can be overlooked. There are so many bands fighting for the press
lime light with their ‘new, unrivalled, unheard of’ sound, that sometimes,
just sometimes, the pure originality of others can be seen as ‘old news’.
The irony here is, technically White Light
Motorcade do in fact hold a ‘new’ sound- compared to the likes of The Mars
Volta, Ladytron and The Polyphonic Spree- by bringing the old, back into
the now.
Unlike a lot of New York bands, White Light
Motorcade haven’t had that leg up that others had, and aside from their
recent (f***ing awesome) slot at this year’s Reading and Leeds festival,
these lads have started off in the teeniest of venues (think the Dublin
Castle pub in London).
Maybe though, this is because White Light
Motorcade don’t sound directly like there from New York; there’s none of
that electro techno disco wank and that ‘we are from NYC, we rule’ s***
goin’ on here…oh no…in fact, they could almost pull themselves off as British…
The initial indie edge on ‘Dream Day’ flows
into a stone roses feel jam, where as ‘I Could Kick Myself’ literally slams
into dirty, unadulterated rock aggression.
‘Open Your Eyes’ is one kick arse track.
With all the swagger of a NY Liam Gallagher on vox, and start-stop, head
bang interludes of melody packed chording, this is a rich mans (of late)
brit rock. With the lazy drawl of ‘you see your life is far from over,
stop wasting time on a four leaf clover’, you try and not smile with delight
when you reminisce of when rock over here, sounded this good, which unluckily
was in the 90’s.
WLM take a full tilt turnaround on ballad
‘Useless’, with a compassionate sound, and the gentleness of the much underrated
Easyworld, contrary to both ‘My Way’ and ‘Its Happening’ which hold the
raw rock and catch ridden hooks of The Wildhearts.
‘Semi Precious’ launches full throttle
into a guitar heavy groove riff, harmonic generated backing vocals, and
a reassuring ‘doo, doo, doo dooo’.
Back to the past with a new edge. Prepare
for White Light Motorcade to tap to you on the shoulder, and holler you
modestly over for a much needed fix of the action.
